Our Commitment to a Greener Environment

STJ Retail has a long-standing corporate policy of providing a safe and healthy work place, protecting the environment, and conserving energy and natural resources. These policies have served the environment and our business well over the years and provide the foundation for the following corporate policy objectives.

Reduce Energy Consumption

STJ Retail ensures the responsible useage of energy throughout our business, including conserving energy, improving energy efficiency, and giving preference to renewable over non-renewable energy sources when feasible. STJ Retail utilizes power management which places monitors, hard drives and computers into a low-power “sleep” mode after a period of inactivity. The use of power management reduces energy consumption, cooling costs and noise while prolonging the battery life of laptop PCs

STJ Retail has implemented the following power management policies:

  • Turn off monitors after 15 minutes or less of inactivity.
  • Turn off hard drives after 15 minutes or less of inactivity.
  • System standby or sleep after 30 minutes or less of inactivity.

Reduce Paper Usage

Careless use and disposal of office paper and office supplies is rapidly clogging landfills, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions, depleting natural resources, contributing to air and water pollution, and wasting energy. Reducing overall office paper use not only saves resources but money as well.

STJ Retail has implemented the following paper usage reduction policies:

  • Print and copy on both sides.
  • Use e-mail to exchange documents and memos instead of printing or faxing.
  • Adjust fonts, margins and spacing to fit more text on a standard sheet.
  • When copying, reduce size to fit two pages on one standard sheet.
  • Reuse paper printed on one side for internal memos, "draft" documents or scratch pads.
  • Use electronic data storage instead of hard copy files.

Reduce Electronic Waste

While advances in technology give consumers the availability to upgrade to newer, faster and more energy-efficient electronics, it is important to remember that older electronics units and devices may not have reached the end of their useful life. STJ Retail supports electronics recycling as a way to conserve valuable resources and participates in programs designed to assist consumers in recycling used electronic products. These programs help place electronic products including cell phones and printer cartridges into the appropriate recycling streams. Computer hardware is refurbished and donated to schools, charities and economically disadvantaged or disabled citizens. These efforts benefit both the environment and our community.

Reduce Emissions

In order to reduce the carbon footprint of our organization STJ Retail encourages employees to carpool, take public transportation or telecommute. To reduce the impact of our business travel STJ Retail utilizes remote meeting technologies such as audio teleconferencing, web conferencing or video conferencing instead of meeting in person.
